Summer On Water


Fishing:


Wells Gray/Clearwater is a world-class fishing destination for fresh water trout. While in August the salmon begin to run in the North Thompson, Clearwater, Raft and Mad Rivers, and the anglers are out in force to greet them. Visitors are welcome to the Freshwater Fish Hatchery in Clearwater which offers an inside view on how lakes are stocked.


You will need a BC fishing-license, and should read the regulations governing restrictions on where and when you are allowed to fish, on catch-and-release, and on quotas for different species.


Some of the major fishing lakes include:

  • Murtle Lake - 100 km of shoreline outlines this pristine, canoe-only lake in the wilderness that holds rainbow and kokanee trout
  • Clearwater Lake and Azure Lake - Each lake is approx 22 km long, with Clearwater running north/south and Azure east/west. Fish for rainbow trout, and admire some of the many spectacular waterfalls for which Wells Gray is famous
  • Mahood Lake - Holds Kokanee, whitefish, burbot, Rainbow and lake trout

Canoeing:


The many water ways make Wells Gray / Clearwater a paddler’s paradise! Fabulous scenery, peaceful wilderness and wildlife viewing will take your breath away. Many of the lakes are equipped with shoreline campsites, picnic tables, bear-proof food safes and outhouses and most have sandy beaches for swimming. Canoeing in Wells Gray / Clearwater is an experience like none other.


Some of the most popular lakes and rivers to canoe include:

  • Murtle Lake - North America’s largest non-motorized, paddle only lake
  • Clearwater / Azure Lakes - Over 50 kms of paddling with beaches, waterfalls, rivers, hikes and wildlife viewing. A 500m portage links Azure Lake to Clearwater Lake.
  • Mahood Lake - Offers three backcountry user maintained campsites that are accessible only by boat
  • Hobson Lake – Located in the backcountry of Wells Gray provides a truly remote, wild paddling experience

Kayaking:


The Clearwater River hosts every class of wave imaginable. Long sections of rapids to smaller "play waves" on the lower river will keep you exploring for as long as you have time. The annual Clearwater Kayak Fest provides an opportunity for kayak enthusiasts to test their skills on this amazing river.


The North Thompson River and the big lakes of Wells Gray are also perfect for larger touring kayaks.

Whitewater rafting:


The Adams River, North Thompson River and Clearwater River all provide exiting whitewater rafting adventures for every skill level. Clearwater River is recognized as one of the most exciting whitewater rafting rivers in BC and is an action packed exhilarating experience, with names such as “The Wall”, “Buckaroo” and “Tsunami”. You will see spectacular canyon scenery, incredible wilderness country and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
